Thennai is Cocos nucifera, coconut — the palm that gives water, kernel, oil and a leaf for a roof. Hindi nariyal is the same tree. It is not palmyra (Borassus), not areca, and not an oil-pulling product. Food and timber-of-the-poor first. A tender coconut and a dry copra nut are the same species at different harvests.

How to recognise Thennai
Linnaeus published Cocos nucifera. The family is Arecaceae. It is a tall, usually unbranched palm: pinnate fronds, a large inflorescence, and a fibrous drupe whose inner shell holds water and a white kernel.
Tender (ilaneer) water and soft jelly are one harvest. Dry copra and pressing oil are another. Both are this palm.
Tamil thennai / thengai / thennaimaram, Hindi nariyal and Sanskrit nārikela are the names. English coconut is reliable. Dwarf and tall forms remain this species.
Borassus flabellifer (panai) is a different fan-leaved palm. Areca catechu is the betel-nut palm. Shared “palm” is not one tree.
The husk is coir. The shell is fuel and a bowl. Those are craft, not a second species.
Inflorescence sap is tapped on some coasts for a sweet or a ferment. That is a coastal craft, not a supermarket nut.
Leaves are pinnate, not palmate. A fan leaf on a Tamil shore is usually palmyra.
Dwarf palms fruit sooner and stay in a backyard. Tall palms hold a skyline. Both remain Cocos nucifera.
Traditional use of Thennai
South Indian food
Kernel, milk, oil and water are cuisine.
Tamil, Malayali and wider coastal kitchen practice
Household
The tree is a homestead factory. Ceremony uses the nut. Ceremony is not a medical claim.

Modern notes on Thennai
Fat chemistry of the oil is well described and heavily advertised. A tadka spoon and a branded jar are not interchangeable sentences.
The practical modern issue is other palm oils in a coconut tin, and water sold as a sports drug.
Thennai safety
Culinary kernel, milk, water and ordinary cooking oil are the ordinary exposures. Falling nuts and climbing accidents are the real palm hazards.
People who already avoid coconut fat should stay with what their clinician said.
Ecology and sourcing
It is a planted coastal and homestead palm.
Nobody needs a wild-forest story for a backyard palm.

No. Ilaneer is the tender-water harvest of this same coconut. Copra is the dry harvest.
What is the Tamil name of Cocos nucifera?
Thennai. The nut is thengai.
Is palmyra the same?
No. Palmyra is Borassus flabellifer, a fan palm. Coconut is this pinnate palm.
