Panai is Borassus flabellifer, palmyra — the fan palm of a Tamil dry skyline. Hindi taad and Sanskrit tala are the same tree. It is not coconut, not areca, and not a jaggery brand. Pathaneer, nungu, and the boiled seedling (panangkizhangu) are three harvests of one palm. The leaf is a roof and a script.

How to recognise Panai
Linnaeus published Borassus flabellifer. The family is Arecaceae. It is a tall, usually solitary palm: large palmate (fan) leaves, a massive black trunk when old, and separate male and female trees. Fruit is a large dark drupe with sweet jelly around the seeds.
Fan leaves are the public mark against coconut. If the frond is pinnate, it is not palmyra.
Tamil panai / panaimaram, Hindi taad / tar and Sanskrit tāla are the names. English palmyra and toddy palm are this species. African Borassus species are cousins.
The fan leaf and the round, black-skinned fruit holding jelly seeds (nungu) are the easiest marks. “Palm jaggery” without a species is a bin.
Coconut is Cocos nucifera, pinnate. Areca is a slimmer nut palm. Three palms, three pages.
Male trees give the tap for pathaneer. Female trees give fruit. A lonely tree may be the wrong sex for the harvest you wanted.
The seedling tuber is boiled as panangkizhangu. That is this palm at another age, not a yam.
Leaves are used for thatch and, historically, for writing. A dried ola is craft, not a second species.
Traditional use of Panai
Tamil food and craft
Sap, fruit jelly, seedling and leaf are cuisine and household craft.
Tamil coastal and dry-country practice
Household
The tree is a homestead factory. Ceremony uses the leaf. Ceremony is not a medical claim.
Household practice
Modern notes on Panai
Fresh sap ferments in hours. A morning glass and a distilled spirit are different strengths.
The practical modern issue is coconut jaggery sold as palmyra, and climbing accidents sold as romance.
Panai safety
Culinary nungu, cooked seedling and fresh morning sap are the ordinary food exposures. Climbing a tall palm is the real hazard.
Fermented sap is alcohol. Children should not inherit a tapper’s glass.
Ecology and sourcing
It is a planted and protected dry-country palm, slow to mature.
Nobody should fell a skyline palm for a tin.

Questions about Panai
Is panai the same as thennai?
No. Thennai is coconut, a pinnate palm. Panai is this fan palm. Look at the leaf.
What is the Tamil name of Borassus flabellifer?
Panai. The fruit jelly is nungu; the seedling is panangkizhangu.
Does every palmyra give nungu?
Fruit comes from female trees. Sap is tapped mainly from males. Sex of the palm decides the harvest.
