Rose apple

Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston · Myrtaceae

Rose apple is a South-east Asian homestead tree whose pale, crisp fruit tastes and smells of rose water, which is why Tamil calls it panneer pazham. In Hindi it is sometimes called gulab jamun, the same name as the sweet, but the fruit has nothing to do with it. The fruit is hollow, with one or two loose seeds that rattle inside. Older books call it Eugenia jambos.

How to recognise Rose apple

It is a dense evergreen tree, usually seven to twelve metres tall, with a broad crown that casts deep shade.

The leaves are long, narrow and pointed, glossy dark green, and new flushes come out pink to coppery.

The flowers are large greenish-white powder puffs made of hundreds of long stamens.

The fruit is round to bell-shaped, about the size of a lime, pale yellow often blushed pink, with a dry, crisp flesh.

Wax apple and water apple have juicier, bell-shaped fruits that are solid inside, not hollow.

Traditional use of Rose apple

Kitchen

The fruit is eaten fresh from the tree, especially by children, and is cooked into jams and jellies for its scent.

Kitchen

In parts of South-east Asia slices are added to fruit salads and syrups, and the flowers are candied.

Modern notes on Rose apple

The rose scent comes from aroma compounds in the flesh, including some found in rose petals.

The fruit is low in calories, with modest vitamin C and fibre.

Its hard wood and dense crown made it a popular windbreak and shade tree on tropical estates.

Rose apple safety

Eat the ripe flesh only and discard the seeds, which are not food. The fruit bruises easily and spoils fast, so eat it soon after picking.

Ecology and sourcing

It is native to South-east Asia and has spread across the tropics.

It has become invasive along streams in Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Réunion, where its shade stops native plants from growing.

Bees and fruit bats visit the flowers, and bats and birds carry the fruit away.
