European pear, Pyrus communis, is the classic bell-shaped pear with soft, buttery flesh, varieties such as Bartlett (William) and Conference. In India it is grown in the hills of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, and imported. European pears are picked firm and ripen off the tree. Fruit left to ripen on the branch turns gritty and brown inside.

How to recognise European pear
It is a deciduous tree with glossy, oval, finely toothed leaves on long stalks.
White, five-petalled flowers with purple-tipped stamens appear in spring, in clusters, before or with the leaves.
The fruit is usually pear-shaped, with a narrow neck and broad base, green ripening to yellow or russet, with soft, juicy flesh when ripe.
The flesh contains small, gritty stone cells. Asian pear, Pyrus pyrifolia, is round, crisp and apple-like.

Pears are eaten fresh, poached in wine, baked in tarts and made into perry, a fermented drink.

Modern notes on European pear
Pears are a good source of fibre, particularly in the skin, and of vitamin C.
Pears contain sorbitol and fructose, which can cause digestive upset in some sensitive people.
European pear safety
Eat the fruit; the seeds contain small amounts of amygdalin and are best not eaten in quantity.
Ecology and sourcing
It descends from wild pears of Europe and western Asia and needs cold winters to flower well.
Most varieties need a second variety nearby for cross-pollination by bees.
Fire blight, a bacterial disease, is a serious threat to pear orchards worldwide.
