Thamarai

Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. · Nelumbonaceae

Thamarai is Nelumbo nucifera, the sacred lotus — the tank flower that holds water on a leaf. Hindi kamal and Sanskrit padma are the same plant. It is not a water lily (Nymphaea). The seed sits in a flat shower-head torus. The rhizome is a vegetable in some kitchens. Ceremony first, then food. Not a “chakras” product.

How to recognise Thamarai

Gaertner published Nelumbo nucifera. The family is Nelumbonaceae, not Nymphaeaceae. It is an aquatic perennial: peltate leaves that stand above water, large many-tepaled flowers (pink or white) on a separate stalk, and a distinctive flat torus packed with seeds.

Water lilies have a different ovary and usually float their leaves flatter.

English sacred lotus and Indian lotus are this species. American lotus is N. lutea, a cousin.

The raised, flat-topped seed head (torus) sets lotus apart from every water lily in the tank. “Lotus tea” dust is weaker.

Nymphaea nouchali and other water lilies share a tank and not a genus. Look at the torus.

Leaves shed water. That is ordinary epidermis, not a miracle, and not a product.

Rhizomes are starchy, with holes in cross-section. That vegetable is this plant underground.

Pink and white flowers remain this species. Colour is a form.

Stamens are many and fall as the torus ripens. A shower-head full of holes is this plant after the seeds leave.

Traditional use of Thamarai

Temple

The flower is an offering. That ceremonial use is the most honest story.

Temple practice

Food

Seeds (makhana when puffed from a related Euryale, or lotus seeds themselves) and rhizomes enter some kitchens. Euryale ferox is a different plant often sold as fox nut.

South and East Asian kitchen practice

Modern notes on Thamarai

A tank flower is ceremony. Rhizome and seed are food in named kitchens. Extract papers do not turn a temple flower into a tablet.

The practical modern issue is Nymphaea in a lotus tin, and Euryale sold as lotus seed.

Thamarai safety

Ceremony and culinary seed or rhizome from a known tank are the ordinary exposures. Unknown wild aquatics are not a salad.

Ecology and sourcing

It is a planted tank crop. Flower harvest does not require draining a temple tank.
