Dendrocalamus strictus (Roxb.) Nees · Poaceae
Dendrocalamus strictus, male bamboo or kallan moongil, is the most widespread bamboo of India’s dry forests. Its culms are thick-walled and often almost solid, which makes them strong enough for scaffolding, lathis, furniture and paper pulp. Its young shoots are eaten, but only after thorough boiling, because raw shoots contain compounds that release cyanide.

How to recognise Male bamboo
It grows in dense clumps of many culms, up to about fifteen metres tall, usually grey-green and dusty-white when young. In very dry places the culms are nearly solid all the way through, which gave rise to the name “male” bamboo.
The leaves are narrow and rough, and the plant often stands bare in the dry season, unlike the evergreen bamboos of wet forests.
Like other bamboos it flowers rarely and gregariously. Whole populations flower over a few years, often at intervals of several decades, set seed and then die back.
Bambusa bambos, the thorny bamboo of riverbanks, has hollow culms and stout spiny branches at the base.
Traditional use of Male bamboo
Craft and building
The strong culms are used for poles, roofing, ladders, baskets, mats and walking sticks, and for the lathis carried by police and watchmen.
Indian village practice
Food
Young shoots are sliced, soaked and boiled, then cooked into curries or fermented, especially in central and north-east India.

Modern notes on Male bamboo
Bamboo shoots contain taxiphyllin, a cyanogenic glycoside that releases hydrogen cyanide. Slicing, soaking and boiling remove most of it, which is why traditional preparation matters.
It is a major raw material for India’s paper industry, and forestry research focuses on managing clumps for sustained harvest.
Male bamboo safety
Never eat bamboo shoots raw. Boil them thoroughly in fresh water and discard the water.
Ecology and sourcing
It is the characteristic bamboo of dry deciduous forest from the Western and Eastern Ghats to central India and the Himalayan foothills.
Mass flowering produces huge seed crops that can trigger rodent population booms, a known problem after bamboo flowering in parts of India.

Questions about Male bamboo
Why is Male bamboo called male bamboo?
Its culms are thick-walled and often nearly solid, which made them seem stronger than hollow bamboos.
Can you eat the shoots raw?
No. Raw shoots release cyanide. Boil them thoroughly first.
Is bamboo a tree?
No. It is a giant grass, in the same family as rice and wheat.
