Coffea canephora Pierre ex A.Froehner · Rubiaceae
Robusta is the lowland coffee from tropical Africa, now the main coffee of India by volume. Most Indian robusta grows in Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Hassan in Karnataka and in Wayanad in Kerala. It has more caffeine than arabica and a stronger, more bitter taste, which suits instant coffee, espresso blends and South Indian filter coffee. Older packets call it Coffea robusta.

How to recognise Robusta
It is a large shrub or small tree, often pruned to two or three metres, with long, flexible branches.
The leaves are big, glossy and wavy, larger and thinner than arabica leaves.
Fragrant white flowers open in dense clusters along the branches a week or so after the first rains or irrigation, called blossom showers.
The cherries are small, round and red when ripe, packed tightly on the branches, and take about ten to eleven months to ripen.
Robusta beans are rounder and smaller than the oval, curved-seam beans of arabica.
Traditional use of Robusta
Kitchen
South Indian filter coffee blends often mix robusta with arabica and chicory and are brewed slowly in a metal filter and mixed with hot milk.

Farming
Coffee in Kodagu and Wayanad grows under shade trees, with pepper vines trained up the shade trees as a second crop.
Karnataka and Kerala estate practice
Kitchen
In Vietnam, the largest robusta producer, the coffee is dripped strong over sweetened condensed milk.

Modern notes on Robusta
Robusta beans contain about two to two and a half per cent caffeine, nearly double the level of arabica.
The plant cannot pollinate itself, so estates mix different clones to set fruit, unlike self-fertile arabica.
It tolerates heat, lower altitudes and some diseases better than arabica, which makes it important as the climate warms.
Arabica itself arose from a natural cross between robusta and another wild coffee species.
Robusta safety
Healthy adults are generally advised to keep caffeine under about 400 milligrams a day, and pregnant women under about 200. Children should not drink strong coffee.
Ecology and sourcing
It grows wild in the lowland rainforests of West and Central Africa.
Bees visit the flowers heavily, and shade-grown estates in the Western Ghats shelter many birds.
The coffee berry borer beetle is its most damaging pest in India.
