Elumichai is the Tamil grocery name for a sour citrus. The common lemon is filed under Citrus limon, a hybrid sometimes written Citrus × limon; key lime (C. aurantiifolia) and other sour citrus share the Tamil word. It is not orange, not citron alone, and not a “detox.” Lime has its own page.

How to recognise Elumichai
Osbeck published the combination. The family is Rutaceae. It is a small thorny tree: winged petioles, gland-dotted leaves, scented white flowers flushed purple in bud, and an oblong to oval yellow fruit with a thickish rind and very sour juice.
Tamil elumichai covers lemon and lime in ordinary speech. A thin-skinned, rounder, greener fruit is often C. aurantiifolia (key lime) or a local lime. A street-stall glass could be either, so look at the fruit.
Tamil elumichai, Hindi nimbu / neebu and Sanskrit nimbūka are the grocery names. English lemon is this heading. Lime is a different, usually smaller sour citrus. Citron (C. medica) is a thick-rind cousin.
Kew treats the lemon as a cultivated hybrid in the Citrus complex.
Scratch the rind and smell it; lemon and lime peel oils smell different.
Leaves of some Citrus season rice. A leaf is not a fruit, and curry leaf (Murraya) is a different plant.
Meyer lemon and other named types remain inside the lemon complex. Sweetness is a cultivar gradient, not a species split.
Aegle marmelos (vilvam) is another sour-sweet rutaceous fruit. Shared family is not a sherbet.
Flowers are scented. A scentless “lemon” blossom on a different tree is a reason to look at the fruit.
Traditional use of Elumichai
South Asian food
Juice, pickle and a squeeze on a snack are cuisine.

Modern notes on Elumichai
Citric acid and rind oil are why the fruit tastes and smells as it does. A squeeze and a capsule are not interchangeable.
The practical modern issue is lime and lemon under one Tamil word, and bottled juice that is mostly acid and colour.
Elumichai safety
Culinary juice and pickle are the ordinary exposures. The juice is very acidic. Teeth and reflux notice that.
Rind oil can bother skin in the sun in some people. Essential oil is not a fruit.
Ecology and sourcing
It is a grafted orchard crop.
